Teacher indicted for abusing student

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A 36-year-old school teacher of an integrated school in the mountainous barangay of Cebu City is facing charges in court for allegedly taking advantage of his minor student and enticed the child to have sex with him.

Prosecutor II Jennifer Karen Leyson held a math teacher, whose name is withheld by The FREEMAN to protect the identity of the minor, for trial after finding probable cause against him.

The city prosecutor’s office has recommended a P200,000 bail for the temporary liberty of the accused, while the case is pending in court.

In his complaint, a 16-year-old girl alleged that the accused was her math teacher while she was in Grade 7 and they became best of friends.

When she was in Grade 10, the accused reportedly started sending flattering messages to her.

When she did not reply, the accused reportedly would threaten to hurt himself.

She would then see him.

Last May 3, 2018, she was brought somewhere along the Transcentral Highway in Taptap, Cebu City on board a vehicle. There, the victim was allegedly sexually abused.

The accused allegedly promised her to get the first honors, she said.

The accused had denied the charges filed against him.

He alleged that, on the said date, he was taking care of his three children at home because his wife was on duty.

Leyson had ruled in favor of the minor.

Thus, the criminal case of child abuse was filed before the court. — GAN (FREEMAN)
