El Niño damage in Cebu hits P105 million
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has reported that the consolidated damage to crops and live stocks due to El Niño has already ballooned to almost P105 million.
The amount is more than P26 million higher compared to the P78-million damage reported last week. Tuburan reported almost P20 million damage to crops and live stocks. The town’s local disaster officer reported and an estimated P13,424,586 damage to crops and P12,700 to animals.
According to the report, coffee farmers from Barangays Kaorasan, Tomugpa, and Mag-alwa were most affected by the dry spell. An estimated 300 coffee farmers with at least 298 hectares of farms are affected.
Bogo City also reported P1, 206, 725 damage to livestock and poultry in 21 barangays. Moalboal town reported 75 hectares of farmlands planted with corn were affected by the heat leaving at least P2 million in damage.
In Alcantara, there were 98 farmers and 194 fishermen who were affected. The town reported P3.5 million damage.
According to PDRRMO, 36 local government units have already submitted a validated report of the damage assessment. The other LGUs are yet to complete their assessment. — FPL (FREEMAN)
