Cordova mayor finds Matti’s statement on bakasi offensive
CEBU, Philippines — Cordova Mayor Teche Sitoy-Cho finds it offensive when movie director Erik Matti described the Cebu street food episode of a docu-series of Netflix which featured bakasi, among food, as bordering on poverty porn.
Cho, in a press conference, said that bakasi was featured as a delicacy of Cebu and not in the entire Philippines.
The reelectionist mayor is not demanding an apology but she hopes Matti would do it.
“The #Cebu episode of #StreetFood at @netflixph borders on poverty porn. The dishes except for lechon are food that are not really a staple of Filipinos. All the other Asian countries had their classic world-renowned street food while we had…bizarre,” Matti said in his Instagram post.
The mayor said that bakasi is very abundant in her coastal area. During Dinagat Festival, which is celebrated every August, they have a display of 13 different dishes of bakasi.
Cho said that Matti is very much welcome to visit Cordova and taste its famous delicacy.
"Kung gusto niya mobisita siya diri sa Cordova unya atoa siyang e-tour aron pud makakaon siya og bakasi," the mayor said. (If he wants to visit us, we can give him a tour so that he can try eating bakasi.)
The exotic bakasi is known as an aphrodisiac and it is well loved not only by the people of Cordova but also of residents in the different parts of the province and foreigners as well.
"Lami gyud ni ang bakasi sa Cordova kay bisan sa kalayo sa among lugar, daghan gyud manganhi para mokaon og bakasi," the mayor said. (Bakasi tastes really good. People from far places come to Cordova to eat Bakasi.)
Cho added that when President Rodrigo Duterte came to her town, the latter also ate their delicacy.
But despite of Matti's negative comment, more and more people came to her town to eat bakasi out of curiosity. — MBG (FREEMAN)
