Mandaue as lone district beneficial to 3 LGUs

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III believes that making Mandaue City a lone district will be beneficial to the city and to the two remaining towns of the Sixth District, Cordova and Consolacion.

He said the move is good for the two towns as they will share the funds the district will get from the national government.

The only inconvenience he anticipates is that the remaining towns are located separately and kilometers apart.

“In terms of share of national government funds, they (Consolacion and Cordova municipal governments) get a bigger allocation now unlike before when three of them have to share,” he told reporters on Thursday.

Davide is optimistic that there will be economic progress in Cordova and Consolacion.

On the other hand, becoming a lone district will be beneficial for the city but it may take effect fully following the May 13 national and local elections.

In a separate interview, Consolacion Vice Mayor Aurelio Damole welcomes the recent development and was elated for the Mandaue City.

“I’m so happy for Mandaue. The lone district issue is long overdue. Kudos to Cong. Cortes and the city officials of Mandaue,” he told The FREEMAN in a text message.

“I leave it to our lawmakers as to Consolacion being left out with Cordova in the sixth district. If they feel that redistricting is the answer, I bow to their wisdom. Consolacion will move on regardless,” he added.

Senate approved on Monday the bill seeking to separate Mandaue City from the 6th legislative district of Cebu province.

It was earlier reported that the approved Senate bill is only awaiting the signature of President Rodrigo Duterte. — MBG, (FREEMAN)
