Radaza urges millennials to be responsible social media users

CEBU, Philippines — Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza has advised the millennials to be responsible in using social media as this can make or break their future.

"The use of their Facebook, Instagram, they should be very careful in social media," she said during her State of the Children’s Report (SCR) yesterday morning at Hoopsdome.

Around 10,000 students from selected schools and their teachers attended the SCR.

Radaza also urged young individuals to refrain from posting and sharing unverified information.

"I hope you’d be responsible in sharing information. Dili mo magpataka og share kun unsa inyong nabasahan sa Facebook, sa Instagram or sa Twitter. Nga dili magpataka og paminaw ug pag-share sa mga fake news," she said.

Radaza said social media expose children to further vulnerability, thus she said it’s important to learn to use social media wisely.

Also, the mayor encouraged the youth to study harder.

She said the city is giving cash incentives to those who excel in their studies.

"Mao nang gi-awhag ta mong tanan sa pagtuon ug maayo. Aron sa inyong pag-take sa inyong board exams puhon puhon, ma awardan kamo namo ug cash incentives," she said.

The city is also constructing additional classrooms to address shortage, she said.

Tricycle Ban

In a separate development, Radaza is in favor of banning tricycles and pedicabs from plying the national highways.

Her statement came after the Department of Interior and Local Government’s directive to local government units to enforce the ban.

While the ban on tricycles from plying the national highways has been in place since decades ago, it was not strictly implemented in many municipalities and cities.

Radaza said allowing tricycle and pedicab drivers to traverse the national highways puts the lives of their passengers at risk.

He said these vehicles should only operate within the interior parts of the barangays.

"Dili pa biyahe gyud sa national road which we have been observing that," she said.

She said though there were erring drivers caught violating the rule. Most of them were arrested along Marigondon road.

Around 4,000 tricycles are recorded in the city. — KBQ (FREEMAN)
