COSAP to educate youth on ill-effects of drugs

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — In celebration of the Drug Awareness Month, Cebu City Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP) will hold an anti-illegal drug education campaign in private and public schools this month.

This was after COSAP head Garry Lao sees the importance to inform and educate the students of the negative effects of illegal drugs.

"We have to understand that young students frequently begin to experiment with alcohol, smoking and illegal drugs during their middle school age. It is very important for our young students to know about the harmful effects of drugs," he told The FREEMAN.

This is the second year that his office will be doing an education campaign to the youth.

In July 2017, COSAP launched the campaign in Carreta and Tejero Elementary Schools.

Aside from schools, the barangays will also be the subject of the education campaign. However, COSAP has yet to plot the schedule.

"In celebration of our drug awareness month, we urge everyone to get involved in the campaign against illegal drugs," Lao said.

Aside from this, the said office has prepared various activities for the drug awareness month.

This coming November 11, COSAP will be having a parade of float and puppeteers.

The most beautiful float and puppeteers will be given an award.

On the same day, there will be slogan and poster making contest for barangay level.

On November 12, there will be a short filmmaking contest and the following day, the slogan and drawing contest will be held.

On Nov. 14, there will be a slogan and poster-making contest in schools.

Lao said the prizes for the competition range from P3,000 to P20,000 which will be charged to COSAP account. (FREEMAN)
