CEBU, Philippines — A six-year-old girl in Carcar City died from dengue last Wednesday morning.

According to local midwife Evangelina Tapia, the child was only brought to the rural health center for a checkup on October 1 due to a month-long "on and off fever."

The Carcar City Health Office (CHO) identified the victim as Mary Kim Unabia.

CHO Head Dr. Grace Alcoseba said that the first Complete Blood Count (CBC) results of the child showed that her platelet count was "okay."

Given the symptoms, the patient was advised to take another CBC the following day but failed to show up for a follow-up checkup. Six days later, the child was brought to the Cebu Provincial Hospital - Carcar for admission.

It was then that Unabia turned out positive during a dengue test. She was referred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center but was already in a "critical" stage.

"Walay namatay sa miaging tuig, karon ra ni," Alcoseba said.

CHO statistics showed that there are 106 dengue cases from January to October 6. On the same period last year, there were 202 cases but zero casualty. (FREEMAN)
