MCIA operations back to normal

CEBU, Philippines — Operations at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) returned to normal yesterday following the completion of the runway rehabilitation.

“We have a new terminal and with this newly rehabilitated runway, much better services ang atong mahatag,” said MCIA General Manager Steve Dicdican.

At least two contractors were tapped to undertake the 255-million asphalting overlay project of the airport runway for 21 days.

The project started on September 21.

Moreover, motorists are advised to come earlier to the airport to avoid being stuck in traffic at the Marcelo Fernan Bridge (second bridge) due to an ongoing repair of its viaduct.

The road repair started on September 20 and is expected to be finished on September 30, said Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management Systems Chief Mario Napule.

The airport is near the second bridge and heavy traffic is expected to build up there also with the implementation of the traffic rerouting scheme.

Motorists bound for Mactan are advised to use the right lane of the second bridge, pass by the M.L. Quezon Highway road of Barangay Pasok, and make a left turn in a slot near the Philippine National Bank.

The Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH) opted to open the other half of the lane for vehicles to traverse to the island during the daytime.

Napule, however, said DPWH will close the whole viaduct from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. to pave the way for the road concreting.

He said his team and the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue City are closely coordinating to man and ease the traffic. — KBQ (FREEMAN)
