Man loses foot in freak accident

Gregg M. Rubio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — An employee of Cebu Manila Water Development, Inc. (CMWD) lost his foot after he accidentally slipped into the machine while cleaning the water treatment facility at their plant in Barangay Cantumog, Carmen Monday afternoon.

Renato Peroso, 46, was rushed to the provincial hospital in Danao City but was later referred to a private hospital in Cebu City.

Peroso said that he was cleaning the sludge of the facility as his overtime work when he slid and had his right barefoot accidentally inserted into the recycling pump machine.

His companion immediately switched off the machine but it was already too late as his foot was already cut to the ankle.

“Disgrasya gyud to sir,” Peroso said.

Peroso said he was given medical assistance by the company and was assured of keeping his job. Peroso worked as pipefitter under the contractor during the construction phase of the bulk water supply project in 2012.

He was later absorbed as water treatment facility operator of CMWD, a joint venture of Manila Water Consortium, Inc. and the Cebu Provincial government, when the project  started commercial operations supplying bulk water to Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) in 2015.

Peroso lives at the bunkhouse, formerly the office of the project contractor.

CMWD has been supplying 35 million liters per day to MCWD consumers with water sourced from the Luyang River in Carmen town. It has a contract with MCWD until 2035. — FPL (FREEMAN)
