2 dead, 10 injured in road mishaps

CEBU, Philippines — Two died while 10 were injured in separate road mishaps on the Transcentral Highway, Barangay Cansomoroy, Balamban Cebu on Monday afternoon.

Edson Mateo, 64, of Banawa, Cebu City lost control of the multicab he was driving after it lost its brake at around 3 p.m.

The multicab flipped three times that resulted in the death of one of the passengers while four others were injured.

The fatality is identified as Edgar Buglo, 49, a resident of Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City.

Police Officer 3 Alby Agua, case investigator, said that the vehicle was bound for Barangay Arpili, Balamban from Cebu City.

Other victims identified as Eutropio Labiste; Ernesto Labiste; Victor Villasencio, 41; and Jose Maria Mateo, all residents of Lapu-Lapu City suffered minor injuries and were immediately brought to the nearest hospital while Buglo was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Mateo voluntarily surrendered to Balamban Police Station and is temporarily detained there while the police are still waiting for the family of the victims to file complaints.

After an hour, an Elf Canter, driven by Sherwin Dorico, also lost its brake and flipped just a few meters from where the first mishap happened.

The police identified the fatality as Eric Brigole, 37, a resident of Tayud, Liloan Cebu.

Agua said that the brake of the Elf malfunction and it flipped.

Brigole, who was at the front seat, was allegedly hit by the rear tire after he jumped off the vehicle causing his death.

“Murag nakuratan siguro ni siya pag-ingon sa driver nga nawagtangan sila og control sa brake maong nilayat,” said Agua.

The victims were bound for Poblacion, Balamban from Cebu City carrying pieces of lumber.

The victims who suffered minor injuries were identified as Crizalde Camacho; Joey Jamboy, 46; Nestor Pepito, 53; Niño Pepito, legal age; Melito Puyos, 24; and Yulo Tibon, 60, all residents of Consolacion, Cebu.

The victims were immediately brought to the hospital for treatment, while Doricois is detained at the Balamban Police Station. —MBG (FREEMAN)
