Inayawan access road to help ease N. Bacalso traffic
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government will develop the access road in Barangay Inayawan to help ease the traffic congestion at south district due to the ongoing construction of the underpass project along N. Bacalso Avenue and F. Llamas Street.
“Now, as soon as possible, it’s a rush project because we want to relieve the traffic,” Mayor Tomas Osmeña said yesterday although he does not have the figures yet as to the amount needed for the project and where they would source the funds.
In a separate interview, Councilor David Tumulak who chairs the committee on public order and safety, told The FREEMAN that the road is already existing but the city only needs to improve it which means it does not require huge amount of money.
“Dili na kinahanglan og budget, ang kulang lang is filling materials para ma-widen siya, street lighting and traffic signs will be put up,” he said.
However, Tumulak admitted that they don’t have a definite date yet when they will implement the project and he still has to discuss it with the engineering department and other concerned offices.
To recall, the Inayawan access road became controversial when a number of fishermen held a protest against its construction, saying they can no longer access the water channel to the sea.
The bridge, with culverts below, connects Inayawan and the Cebu South Coastal Road.
Tumulak said the city government will only allow private cars and trucks to access the road.
After the improvement, all northbound private cars and trucks will pass through White Road in Inayawan then to the access road and to CSCR.
For southbound vehicles, they will pass through the CSCR, then to Inayawan access road and back to their usual route.
“Gi-prepare na sa city government if in case mo-worsen ang traffic so during peak hours ra sila allowed mo-pass didto, in the morning, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and sa afternoon 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” Tumulak said.
Traffic congestion has been a problem of the city government since the construction of an underpass started in August last year.
Meanwhile, Tumulak is asking the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to hold an information dissemination for at least one week that Caimito Street will be closed to traffic for the underpass project.
“Ato sila ipatawag kay dili mana mao ilaha.Nakit-an nako ganiha nga effective tomorrow (today) close to traffic na ang Caimito Street. Wala sila naghatag og saktong panahon sa mga drivers nga makibaw ana, so ato silang hangyoon,” he said.
In a separate interview, DPWH-7 project engineer Roy Dela Cruz said they informed CCTO on the matter.
In fact, CCTO suggested to them that only one lane of Caimito Street will be closed to traffic.
Dela Cruz said they need to close one lane of Caimito Street to extend the retaining wall and for the concreting of the access road.
With this development, southbound vehicles will pass either on Ganciang Street or E. Sabellano Street. (FREEMAN)
