Mandaue cops to hone shooting skills

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City police will get a chance to hone their skills in handling their weapons as the city government will once again spearhead refresher trainings.

Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing said it is important that policemen under the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) are adept at handling a gun.

The mayor plans to conduct a monthly training on gun handling, similar to city-sponsored refresher trainings for Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) personnel.

"The city has been doing it for SWAT teams. We would be expanding that on a rotation basis every (police) station," he said.

MCPO has six police stations with 20 to 30 personnel each.

The training is vital to hone their shooting skills so they can tackle criminality, illegal drugs and terrorism more effectively, the mayor said.

The mayor would not mind spending more to help law enforcers perfect their shooting skills.

"So we will be sure that every station, not just specialized units like the SWAT and the DEU, will be well-versed, will be competent in handling and shooting of firearms," Quisumbing said.

By having them undergo training on shooting skills, he said, policemen in the city would no longer miss targets.

"Para nako, we want to be sure that our police can hit their targets if ever called upon to enforce peace and order," he said. (FREEMAN)
