CH upgrades Rizal Memorial Library

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government has upgraded the Rizal Memorial Library to accommodate more students 24 hours a day.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña improved the public library upon the request of a certain Mitch Roldan, who asked that the city operates it round-the-clock.

“I did not know how important this was to students until you brought it up. You made it happen. Thank you,” Osmeña posted on his Facebook.

Roldan made a request through Facebook asking the mayor to consider operating the library for 24 hours.

“Mayor, I’m also hoping and praying that you will consider having the public library be open for 24/7 for us students who really need to study a library setting. I think students will be glad to pay a little amount to keep the services good kaysa magsige mi’g spend sa McDo niya papahawaon ra diay after pila ka hours. Hope this will be considered,” Roldan asked.

Osmeña said the city government will be upgrading the air conditioning units, closed-circuit-television will be installed, WiFi connection, additional staff, among others. The mayor said he will give more details on the upgrading of the library soon.

“Beginning Friday, the library will be open until Midnight. It is now also open 7 days a week. After all the necessary upgrades are in place, it will be extended to 24 hour operation,” it added.

In a separate interview, Assistant City Administrator Annabeth Cuizon told The FREEMAN that probably the library will be open 24 hours in April next year.

“Basin inig April 14 next year, ato na i-open for 24 hours kay timing sad mo 100 years naman siya and ma-improve nasad nato ang library,” she said.

She is eyeing to put up another 10 staff at the library considering that it will be open for longer hours.

“Maybe mo pull-out ta sa organic nato nga mga employee kay for now wala baya tay budget for hiring new employees. Basin next year maapil nato sa budget,” Cuizon said.

The library has seven staff at present.  Once an additional staff will be assigned at the library, there will be three shifts already.

The public library is located in uptown at the ground floor of Rizal Memorial Library and Museum along Osmeña Boulevard in Barangay Capitol Site. (FREEMAN)
