CEBU, Philippines - With the dry months just around the corner, the Provincial Health Office has warned the public of the possible diseases that the hot weather may bring.

Sunburn, rashes, sore eyes, chicken pox, and stomach ailments like upper gastrointestinal tract and acute gastroenteritis (stomach flu), among others are the most common diseases during dry months, said PHO Chief Dr. Rene Catan.

Flu symptoms such as colds and cough are also common during dry season because of erratic weather that sometimes causes rains.

Catan advised the public, especially those with hypertension and elderly, to always bring water and umbrella or anything that could shield them from the heat of the sun.

The Catholic faithful, especially those who will be joining daytime religious activities for the Holy Week, are also advised to take necessary measures against dehydration. He advised them to drink at least 8 to 12 glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration.

The public is also advised to wear light-colored dress during Holy Week and the rest of the dry months since light colors are known to help lessen heat absorption.

“Hide in shade or seek cool places to prevent ill-effects of too much sun exposure,” Catan said, adding that those involved in outdoor activities or those going to the beach must use sunblock lotion for protection.

If possible, he said people should avoid direct exposure to sun between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Too much sun exposure can also lead to sore eyes, which is also caused by airborne irritants.

The health official said it is best to always observe personal hygiene to prevent eye infection and other diseases from getting transmitted to others.

As people cool themselves from the heat by going to the beach or swimming, they should also be wary of skin diseases from dirty water whether in beaches or pools. (FREEMAN)
