Just follow the law, EMB-7 tells Talisay

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City government and other local government units should just religiously follow the solid management law to avoid violations.

This was what Marco Andrew Silveron, chief of the Environmental Management Bureau 7's Solid Waste Management Division, told Talisay Mayor Edgardo Gullas in a meeting yesterday.

Gullas earlier sought for a meeting with Silveron to get some suggestions on how the city could avoid violations in managing a landfill.

"Ganahan ko makadungog gikan niya og unsa'y iyang suggestions nga angay buhaton kay buhaton nato dayon," said Gullas.

Silveron earlier said that 87 LGUs in Central Visayas have yet to comply with the solid management law, including the closure of open dumpsites, and one of them is Talisay City.

Gullas disclosed that it was him, when he was also mayor of the city way back in 2001, who decided for Talisay City to have its own landfill and identified Barangay Tapul as the location.

Saying he does not have enough knowledge in managing a landfill, Gullas asked Silveron for the possible measures to properly operate a landfill.

Silveron, for his part, said that the city should just be consistent with the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Law of 2001.

"If religiously mo-follow sila kung unsa'y naa sa balaod, ma-prevent ang mga problem sa improper disposal, epekto sa environment didto sa mga tawo," he stressed. (FREEMAN)
