Amateur boxing bouts to entertain fire victims

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Fire victims currently taking shelter outside the Cebu International Convention Center will have some form of entertainment as the Mandaue City government has organized amateur boxing bouts.

In a statement released to the media, the Mandaue City government, through the City Sports Commission, will sponsor a boxing bout every Sunday evening at the CICC grounds.

"It is a grassroots program and at the same time an entertainment under the 2016 fiesta activities," said Stephen Jumao-as, CSC director.

Jumao-as said the amateur boxers they will present are from various boxing gyms in the city and neighboring areas. They will fight for 30 different categories based on one's weight, starting from the minimum of 28 kilograms.

He said the final bout will be held on the last Sunday, and winners will get a special reward.

City spokesperson Roger Paler said this event is one way of entertaining the fire victims while at the camp site.

The March 12 fire in Barangays Guizo and Mantuyong-just at the back of the CICC-left 2,222 families homeless. For the time being, while the city has been reblocking the fire site, the victims are allowed to use the CICC grounds.

Earlier, the city said the reblocking takes four to five months, which could mean the victims have to remain at the CICC for a few more months. (FREEMAN)
