City Council blamed for Brgy Luz traffic

Jessa Agua - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - “They cannot bear the traces of what they have done.”

Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) chief Atty. Collin

Rosell said this referring to the city council which, according to him, was the root cause of the present concern of demolished settlers occupying one lane of Cabantan Street, Barangay Luz.

This has caused traffic concerns as only one lane can be used by passing vehicles.

He blamed the city council for convincing the court for the demolition of 32 homes in Sitio Mabuhay.

“It was the city council who advised the court to demolish it. Now they are very much in a hurry to clear the area? Resulta na na sa ilangbinuhatan, (This is the result of their deeds.)” Rosell told The FREEMAN.

Committee on Housing chairman Councilor Alvin Dizon endorsed to the council, on its February 13 regular session, the barangay resolution forwarded to his office asking the city government, through DWUP, to act on the concern of displaced homeowners occupying the streets.

The resolution, which was passed during Barangay Luz’s special session on January 5, said relocation areas were earlier identified for families affected by the demolition last October in Sitio Mabuhay.

The supposed relocation areas were at Abellana Sports Complex in Sitio Abellana and the open space at Sitio Kalinao but some families created make-shift tents occupying one lane of Cabantan street.

Nevertheless, the DWUP chief said the agency will do its part in convincing the settlers to vacate the street to make way for public and private vehicles plying Cabantan street.

“We tried to stop the demolition from happening and suggested settlement among the claimants and the settlers. Since demolition has already happened, we will help address this problem. But let it be imprinted in the mind that it was the city council who was responsible for this. They should be responsible on how to clear this,” Rosell added.  (FREEMAN)
