“Pakigsaulog”

CEBU, Philippines — The opening of an art exhibit marked the 30th anniversary celebration of one of Cebu’s resorts. Titled “Pakigsaulog” and currently ongoing at the Bluewater Gallery of Bluewater Maribago Beach Resort in Maribago, Mactan, the exhibit presents a series of en plein air artpieces made by the members of Cebu Artists Inc. (CAI).

Actually, the exhibit opened on July 25, two days before the formal celebration of the resort’s 30th anniversary on July 27 and slated to run until Saturday, August 3.

The show consists of watercolors, acrylic and oil-on-canvas pieces that were made on-site at Bluewater Maribago by the exhibiting artists.

At its core, the exhibit reframes some of the resort’s iconic spots and views as wall-bound creative visual tableaus, apart from featuring paintings of various species of birds that’re native to the area.

Collectively, the show encapsulates the many painting styles CAI, as an organization, has been honing and fine-tuning since it was formed 25 years ago.

From works that are steered by the prismacoloring technique in painting to watercolors that are dithered by the dabs of the wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercoloring techniques, the show encapsulates the different narrative and realism-themed painting styles that CAI has been known for – a reputation which grows with the organization’s predilection for contemporary artmaking techniques that merge classic representational and modernist abstract art motifs.

In its continuing vision to highlight the best of Cebu, Bluewater Maribago celebrates its 30th year with the local arts community in “Pakigsaulog” – proof of the resort’s relationship is with the metro’s ever-bustling visual arts sphere.
