Qualities of a Good Wife

LIFE ESSENCE - Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

It’s true that some people jump into marriage without any deep reflection on how to make a marriage work and how it should be sustained for a lifetime.

For me, the wife is the soul of any marriage; without her the household would be chaotic. She is the main anchor of the marriage, the major force in making the family intact.  My late mother, Antonia Uy de los Reyes, was an epitome of a good wife and mother. Despite the rough sailing of my parents’ marriage, my mother stood pat in her role and responsibility to keep our family intact. I must admit, her being prayerful and her steadfast faith in God helped her have the endurance whatever storms came in her life.  I must say that she was a woman worth emulating.

In our radio program, “Babaye Bililhon Ka” of Kahupayan Counseling Center, which airs every Saturday, 2 to 3 p.m. over DYRF, Radio Fuerza 12:15 khtz. wherein I am the main  anchor, I discuss with my co-anchors, Isabel de los Santos and Winda Virtudazo, the qualities of a good wife.  We share the following tips from the www.momjunction.com website:

• Stop nagging. There is a saying in which a nagging wife is compared to a dripping faucet. If you nag and complain constantly, it can create an unwanted rift between you and your husband. This could turn into a vicious cycle, forcing him to avoid you. This can create complications in your relationship and even make them worse as time passes. Nagging does not work, so it is best to stop.

• Keep your home organized. Would you want to live in a messy house? Of course not! Keep your house neat and clean. The healthy environment at home will uplift your husband’s mood and spirit.

•  Give him space. Giving each other space is important in any relationship. You need to realize and accept that your husband has a life separate from you. He has other people and relationships too, such as his parents, siblings, and friends.  He also has his interests and hobbies. Do not stop him from having this other life.

• Express your love. Hiding love does not help your relationship. Your partner will appreciate if you are expressive about your love for him. Find ways to spend time together. Celebrate the little things with him, like special days in his life.

• Be honest. A man will trust you only if you are open with him. It is important for you to be honest with your feelings. Do not keep secrets from your husband.

• Communicate. Good communication is crucial for a successful marriage. Do not nag when problems arise, whether it is in your relationship or at home. Have a calm heart-to-heart talk. When you communicate properly with your husband, he will be willing to listen to you.

• Look good. Take care of yourself and look good after marriage. Many women make a mistake of ignoring their looks after marriage. The fact is that looks will keep your husband attracted to you.
