Discovery Channel airs docu on Antique

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Antique has bragging rights: the province will be featured on Discovery Channel. This is the shout-out of the people of Panay Island, which is part of Western Visayas. But Antique is eclipsed by the popularity of Boracay Island in Aklan.

“Antique is a paradise where the mountains meet the sea. It is a province that may have been in the doldrums for three decades but is now experiencing (its) Golden Age,” said Loren Legarda, Deputy Speaker and Representative of the Lone District of Antique. Loren protects Antique and she has allotted a budget under the Department of Tourism.

In March 2021, Studio H2O organized an expedition team composed of marine researchers, scientists, and underwater cinematographers. Aside from conducting a scientific survey of the reefs in Antique, particularly around the coastal areas of Pandan Bay and Libertad, the project also held a freediving workshop for fisherfolk with the intention of teaching them how to survey, protect and do an inventory of their own marine areas.

“Part of the survey is to have the local people learn the method so they can continue on with the monitoring, or at least be interested in learning more about it,” said Tara Abrina. “The objective of the project was really for tourism, to see where people can go to dive, where guests can stay, and what might be interesting underwater,”

It is in Antique where we can find the oceanic manta ray, which is famous for its majestic form.

“The discovery and sighting of the existence of the manta ray in our waters is so important because it shows they thrive in a healthy marine ecosystem. And the manta ray, of course, must be protected at all costs, especially because it is identified as possibly threatened for extinction,” added Rep. Legarda.

Watch the journey of the expedition team in “Antique: Where the Mountains Meet the Sea”, a 20-minute documentary produced by Studio H2O through the Office of Deputy Speaker Legarda, and DOT in partnership with the Province of Antique.

It will be shown on Discovery Channel today (March 23) at 6:15 pm, with replays on March 24 at 8:15 am and 11:25 am.

This is truly inspiring since “Antique” will be seen in countries namely Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and India.

Former presidential spokesperson Sec. Harry Roque was guest at the famed non-partisan Pandesal Forum of Kamuning Bakery Café, on Monday, March 21, on the celebration of World Poetry Day.

Sec. Roque paid tribute to Filipino workers and to classical Filipino poet Jose Corazon de Jesus or Huseng Batute by reading his poem entitled “Manggagawa” (Worker). Roque said poetry, arts and entertainment are important for national progress. He said he chose the Manggagawa poem of Huseng Batute to honor the working men and women of the Philippines, and to honor one of the country’s greatest poets.

Huseng Batute wrote 4,000 Tagalog or Filipino poems and was acclaimed as “King of Balagtasan.” The “balagtasan” was a public contest of dramatic debate in verse or poems named in honor of poet Francisco Balagtas and this series of competitions was a popular form of entertainment in Manila’s biggest and most expensive theaters from the 1920s up to the 1950s.

When asked to comment on movie stars running for the Senate, he said he welcomes the idea of celebrities taking their chance of seeking a senatorial seat. But Sec. Roque said he hopes these celebrities are ready for the job waiting for them which is to create laws.

Robin Padilla and former Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista join Spox Roque in the senatorial slate of Team Unity.

Since he is a human rights advocate, he was likewise asked to comment on the case filed against actor Kit Thompson for hurting his girlfriend, actress Ana Jalandoni.

On a personal note, as a man, Sec. Roque said he is ashamed of what Kit did. On behalf of all men, he wants to say sorry to Ana. “A man should never hurt a woman,” he said.
