Vince Rillon, Red Mendoza chase their acting dreams

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Vince Rillon is a 23-year-old actor who has appeared on television series and films, including those helmed by Brillante Mendoza.

This pandemic, he finished “GenSan Punch” where he plays a boxer, and “Resbak” where he is the lead. He will be seen in more films this year under directors Brillante, Lawrence Fajardo, and Joel Lamangan, among others.

“Resbak” is his launching film, also by Direk Brillante and written by Troy Espiritu.

He was only 14 where he appeared in Direk Brillante’s 2012 film “Captive.” He was a part of “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” and has an important role in the mini-TV series “Amo” (which can be streamed in Netflix) and the MMFF entry “Mindanao.”

His other TV appearances were in “Carpool” and “Unlocked.” In “Kintsugi,” a collaborative film between the Philippines and Japan, he played a pottery factory worker.

“Resbak,” however, is his biggest break where he portrays a motorcycle thief in cahoots with an SK chairman candidate.

“In our immersion, I was able to talk to somebody involved in said modus. But I am playing a composite character of all the people we’ve talked to for this movie,” shared Vince.

Being able to drive a motorcycle came handy in his motorcycle chase scenes. But he couldn’t do drifting because it is too dangerous.

“Mahirap kapag nasugatan ako sa stunt kasi matitigil ang shooting. Kaya doon na lang ako sa mga eksenang di masyadong delikado,” related Vince.

“Whenever I am given a role, I always make it a point to do an immersion. I would prepare for at least two days for the character. For ‘Resbak,’ tumambay ako sa motorshop tapos may nakilala ako na talagang nagnanakaw ng motor. May ganoon klaseng kabataan pala. I listened to the way they talked. May sarili silang language. In our interview with them, we learned the rudiments of the business, even who their bosses are and where they bring the stolen motorcycles.”

Vince is enjoying himself as an actor. “I am able to express myself. I can change the way I look. My perspective on the realities of life become bigger through immersion. Dati hindi ko naman hilig mag-artista. Gusto ko lang maglaro at umarte. But now I have come to love it because I am able to give life to different characters.”

Vince is a third year college student at Jose Rizal University where he is taking up Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Also cast in “Resbak” are Khalil Ramos, Nash Aguas, Jay Manalo, Albie Casino and Ms. Bibeth Orteza.

While ABS-CBN still doesn’t have a franchise, it has not stopped providing entertainment content to its loyal viewers in whatever platform.

One of these platforms is the KUMU application where they launched ABS-CBN Star Hunt’s Bida Star Boy Next Door, where newcomer Red Mendoza (being managed by R Multimedia Entertainment Production of Roi Diego) made it as one of eight finalists.

This is a talent search for a new leading man and according to Red, four winners will be chosen by September. From all those who sent audition videos, 50 aspirants made it after the first screening. This was later trimmed down to Top 20 and then the top 8.

“I’ve always dreamed of becoming an artista,” said Red in a recent Zoom interview. He was in sixth grade when he felt the desire to be an actor but put the dream on hold to focus on his studies.

“Some of my friends before were kidding me that I am not that good-looking so why should I become an actor. They said I have dark skin and most actors are fair-skinned. I was kind of discouraged but I know, deep in my heart, that I still want to pursue this dream.”

Red considers it a blessing in disguise to be chosen as a KUMU Bida Star Boy Next Door finalist, although he was a bit reluctant to send an audition video.

Aspirants were asked to act out scenes from the movies of Kapamilya stars like Piolo Pascual, Daniel Padilla and Joshua Garcia. If he wins, Red hopes it becomes a stepping stone to showcase his acting talent. He also plans to put up his own business and prepare for his future.
