STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Director Joy Aquino is impressed with Kent Gonzales, one of the lead actors in “Gen-Z,” a new show on TV5 which premiered 9 p.m. Sunday.

“The first time I saw him, I already saw something special in him,” she said of  Kent, who played Sharon Cuneta’s son in “Kuwaresma.”

“There is something interesting with Kent. He adds something to his character.”

What can Kent say of how today’s adults treat the Gen-Z? “It’s hard to be a Gen-Z. Some people seem to have a hard time understanding us. They don’t seem to trust us because we belong to different generations. But we have a strong opinion. We try to fight back with what other people  think is normal because we think differently from them.”

He added that Gen-Z kids have this tendency to move away to confront their loneliness. “Lumalayo kami kasi hindi nila kami ma-gets. Sometimes the way people react to us don’t help at all. Hindi ka maiintindihan ng family member mo na hindi Gen Z. That is hard.”

Also featured in the show are Jerome Ponce, Jane Oineza, Ricci Rivero, Melizza Jimenez, Chie Filomeno, Kent Gonzales, and Darwin Yu.

“Gen Z” is the exciting new Young Adult series that’s hoping to add flavor and adulting drama to Sunday nights. Produced by Cignal Entertainment, Inc. with Regal Entertainment Inc., this family drama promises an inside look at how the younger generation navigates the ins and outs of daily life. At the same time, it shows older generations how to connect and better understand them.

The story is a fresh yet fearless portrayal of the Gen Z’s struggles and aspirations -- tackling the lives of the brothers, Jojo (Ponce) and Kiko (Gonzales) as they enter the world of adulthood with their friends Matet (Oineza) and Rico (Yu).  Part of their friend group are the rebellious wildheart Gina (Filomeno); and upper class sweethearts Migo (Rivero) and Michelle (Jimenez). The show will portray how each character deals with life’s struggles while striving to achieve their ambitions and its impact on their relationships with their family and friends.

“Gen Z” will highlight the diverse yet deeply interconnected stories of these characters as they take on bigger responsibilities while dealing with persons in society they may not fully agree with. Clouding the story of friendship are the individuals’ dilemma within their families, seeking to understand and be understood.

The series will likewise touch on the different dynamics of families and the characters’ perseverance in making their current situations better for themselves and their loved ones, which makes it even more relatable across diverse generations. Joining the young cast are veteran actors led by Joey Marquez, Angeli Bayani, and Teresa Loyzaga.

The show is a real-life depiction of the struggles and priorities of the Gen Zs and how they relate with their families, fresh from the point of view of its Gen Z writers, students from College of Saint Benilde under director Joey Reyes’ mentorship. With authentic portrayal of the kids’ shared values and individuality, it is definitely one of the more exciting shows to watch out for this year.

Catchup episodes also air every Sunday, 6 pm, starting March 14 on One Screen Cignal TV CH.9 and SatLite CH. 35. “Gen Z” can also be watched live and on-demand on Cignal Play App. You can stream every episode for free by registering on cignalplay.com and downloading the app on Android and iOS.

Newbie singer John Gabriel is overwhelmed with the opportunity of being part of “Kontrabida,” the new movie of Superstar Nora Aunor.

He was both happy and nervous when he learned he will be doing a movie with Ms. Nora Aunor that he even practiced how to say his lines even if he has yet to get hold of the script. He is playing Norma’s neighbor in the film.

“It’s a big break for a new actor like me to be given a chance to work with Ms. Nora Aunor. I am so happy and honored.”

During the rehearsal, John said Ate Guy’s eyes were already working like magic. “She’s very good kahit sa rehearsal pa lang. Parang nagsasalita ang mga mata niya. It helped me that Ate Guy was so good in our scene. I hope that I acted well.”

He added, “I always help her whenever I see her. She is like a mother to me in the movie.”

It’s a dream come true for John Gabriel to act alongside Ate Guy. Given another chance, he would love to do a movie again with the People’s National Artist.
