Cheska Loraine Apacible, a Batangueña beauty, won a Special Award at the Miss Tourism Queen International 2019 Elite held in China last week. Kai, as she is called by her family and friends, won Miss Charity in the pageant where Miss China emerged as the grand winner.

The 21-year-old started joining beauty pageants five years ago and the Miss Tourism Queen International Elite 2019 is the seventh pageant that she participated in. She earlier won in the Miss Philippines tilt which sent her as a representative to the pageant in China.

She also planned to join Mutya ng Pilipinas but since she was accepted in a job then, she decided to choose work over joining the pageant.

Kai, who stands at five-feet-six-inches tall, finished Business Administration, Major in Human Resource Development Management at the Batangas State University.

She could not forget the experience joining Miss Tourism Queen International Elite because she made a lot of friends among the candidates. She has no boyfriend at the moment as she wants to focus on her career.

As a Miss Queen Tourism participant, her advocacy is to promote tourism all over the world, in the Philippines and in her hometown of Batangas.

“There are so many interesting tourist spots in the Philippines, not just Boracay and Palawan, which we can promote to attract tourists to visit our country. In Batangas, we have a hidden treasure which we call Verde Island. This island has a lot of coral reefs and unique species under the sea. This place has yet to be explored by tourists, both foreign and local,” Kai explained.

What have you learned from joining the contest in China? “I learned about deep friendship and camaraderie. Communication is important. Chinese people don’t study English in China. They migrate to other countries to learn the language. So how to communicate is very important because of the language barrier,” said Kai.

There were 36 countries who joined the pageant and Kai was fortunate to have won one of the special awards as Miss Charity, which came with a crown and a sash.

When asked if she had any idea why she was crowned Miss Charity, Kai said the judges probably saw her initiative in helping her co-candidates.

“During the coronation night, not everyone had a complete set of makeup so I shared mine with my fellow candidates. As a queen, it doesn’t mean you are only beautiful and intelligent, but you must also have the initiative to help if needed. A queen should also be polite, kind and hospitable. I think the judges saw those traits in me that’s why they chose me as Miss Charity,” explained Kai, who also helped in applying the makeup of the other candidates.

She refused to believe that the China candidate’s victory was a hometown decision. “All candidates deserve to win the crown. I cannot say anything bad about the victory of Miss China. She was very nice and accommodating to all the candidates as well,” said Kai.

The basis in winning the contest, Kai believes, is on the candidate’s character and how she treats her fellow contestants.

Kai has plans of joining other beauty competitions and if there’s an opportunity, she is also interested in joining showbiz. She would love to work with Coco Martin, James Reid and Paolo Avelino if and when showbiz opens its doors to her.
