Martin del Rosario’s ordeal of transforming into Barbs

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Martin del Rosario admitted he didn’t feel too comfortable wearing a bathing suit in some of his scenes for “Born Beautiful” because his “private part” hurts.

Not only was his “private part” wrapped in a plaster, but a lot of tapes were also put around it just to make sure there won’t be a bulge once he wears the bathing suit.

He also said it was hard to sit down, that’s why he was either lying down or standing up so he wouldn’t get too tired in between takes.

“That was one of the hardest things I did in the movie, aside from having all of my body hair waxed and shaved,” added Martin.

Waxing his body hair was another ordeal for him. It grew back quickly, so he had to shave frequently.

Martin has kissing scenes with his two leading men, Kiko Matos and Akihiro Blanco. How would he describe the kissing scenes with them?

“The one with Kiko is wild and animalistic but the one with Aki is romantic,” he answered.

Which of the two kissing scenes did he prefer: the wild or the romantic? “It depends on the mood of Barbs but I can do both.”

Asked if he enjoyed the kissing scenes, the actor said: “At first, I was nervous. But I was supposed to be Barbs. Once you are in character and doing the scene, you will just do it as long as you feel comfortable with it. You will give your all.”

Being pursued by two handsome and gorgeous men made him “feel beautiful,” the actor said with a laugh.

Martin said he immediately said yes to filmmakers Jun Lana and Perci Intalan when the role of Barbs was offered to him after Christian Bables turned it down.

“I watched ‘Die Beautiful’ and I love the film very much. This is not the first time I am doing a project with The Idea First Company. I did the indie film ‘Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23-B.’ I know that the movies they produce and direct are of high quality,” he said.

“When the role of Barbs was offered to me, I readily accepted it. As an actor, I consider doing this role a very huge challenge. This is the most challenging role I’ve done.”

On directors Jun Lana and Perci Intalan saying that he is the perfect choice for the role of Barbs, Martin said, “It’s very flattering to hear that. I hope the audience will love the way I interpreted the role of Barbs.”

After doing “Born Beautiful,” isn’t he afraid he might be typecast in gay roles? He was very effective as Barbs and he might even get acting nominations for his performance.

“After this movie, I will stop accepting gay roles since the ‘Born Beautiful The Series’ will still be shown in the months to come but if there will be a sequel to the ‘Born Beautiful’ film, I won’t hesitate to reprise the role of Barbs,” he added.

Even his parents were very supportive of him playing Barbs. It was his dad who was with him during the entire shoot, including the time he did his kissing scenes with Akihiro and Kiko. His mom, on the other hand, commented that she is very beautiful as Barbs.

He is also very thankful to the support given to him by Paolo Ballesteros who defended him from his bashers.

“Thankful ako kay Paolo kasi from day one, nandiyan na siya to support me, hindi lang sa social media. Pag nasa set kami, very warm siya. Pinaramdam niya talaga ang suporta.”

“Born Beautiful” opens today in cinemas nationwide. It also stars Chai Fonacier and Lou Veloso.

Even if he is busy going around Makati City, District 1 Congressman Monsour del Rosario can still joke around.

“The lolas of Makati love me,” said the former action star, Taekwondo World Champion, Chef de Mission of the National Team for the 2019 SEA Games and now public servant. “I love them too. I can’t forget them because it is my lola who took care of me.”

Monsour is running for Vice Mayor of Makati, under the ticket of Jun-Jun Binay. If elected, he said will give the kind of service “na walang pinipili, kakampi man o hindi” because public service is for everyone.

Monsour passed 51 bills as principal author in his three years in Congress. He was one of the sponsors of the Free Tertiary Education Law and the Universal Health Care Law. So it isn’t true that all that he did in his three years in Congress was get involved in taekwondo. His record as a Congressman will speak for itself.
