Viva Sto. Niño!

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

Tomorrow’s Feast of the Child Jesus continues the message of Christmas --God’s unconditional, immeasurable love.

Remember John 3:16- “For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

How many in the Sinulog crowd are here to celebrate and acclaim the Child Jesus, our dear Sto. Niño? How many remember that this Sunday’s feast is about love, about God’s love for us, about Jesus’ love for us, who came as a child to take up the cross to restore and lead us back to happy reunion with God, our Father?

Hail to God’s son, Hail to our Child Jesus - Viva Sto. Niño!

How many of those who shout Pit Senyor also shout Viva Sto. Niño?

Many are here to raise, wave, and offer their “sampit,” their petitions and pleas, and expecting answers, miracles from the Sto. Niño! Like the worshippers of the Black Nazarene, who are there for God’s miracles, his response to their petitions, devotees are here for the novenas, the prayers, the masses, the procession, the opportunity to pray before the Sto. Niño.

How many come, with their faith, to say thank you to God for his love, to Sto. Niño for his redemptive love?

For if every devotee truly loves God, would they desecrate God’s home - the churches and the streets intended for the Sto. Niño? Would the true devotee who loves God and his earth throw garbage and dirty God’s world? Can the Sinulog crowd be disciplined, responsible and keep the streets clean?

Holy, safe, festive, clean! These are our prayers for this year’s Sinulog.

May the Feast of the Sto. Niño be a holy celebration, one that truly acclaims God and his son Jesus, in prayer and in action.

May everyone be safe and protected as they enjoy the happy fiesta of our Child Jesus.

May the entire fiesta celebration allow all to enjoy, rest, and relax, with much laughter and joy being with family, relatives, friends and neighbors. May all the performers of the Sinulog Parade be kept safe and inspired to share with all the beauty of dancing, of performing for the Lord and his people.

May Sunday’s Fiesta showcase the best of God’s believers- a devoted crowd of disciplined, responsible eco-stewards. Where you find two or three gathered in God’s name, may the whole world see the exemplary behavior of God’s people --keeping God’s churches, his streets, his communities, his earth, clean and sacred.

To reiterate, our special Sinulog prayer- Lord, thank you for touching your  churches and priests to lead, practice and enjoin all to participate in the Church’s Ecological Spirituality campaign, by starting during this Sinulog and onwards, to keep the church, the streets clean and waste-free!

What a beautiful testimony of faith and love can be initiated and demonstrated from this Sinulog! What a beautiful gesture to see the Church as an active advocate, champion, and partner for this year’s Sinulog Basura Watch!

It only takes a few seconds for priests at masses, during processions and novenas, to remind all to look to their front, sides, and back and pick up any waste, bring these home or properly throw it in designated waste containers or eco-stations. Our priests and religious can join other eco-advocates in schools, in media, in businesses, at offices, in communities, elsewhere to inspire, remind all to practice responsible waste management, to keep the streets, communities, everything else, our earth clean as a prayer offering and gift back to God and for his people.
