Nurses top list of most in-demand jobs in Cebu

Carlo S. Lorenciana - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Nurses, sales and creative professionals top the most in-demand jobs in Cebu.

Wesley Chiongbian, president of Cebu jobs site Mynimo.com, said nurses are the most in-demand in Cebu, based on their April data.

Nurses are followed by sales executives and creative professionals including writers and designers.

"(These are currently) the most in-demand in Cebu market," he told The FREEMAN.

He added the Cebu jobs market is also seeing high demand for accountants, purchasers, IT developers, call center professionals and drivers.

Civil, industrial and mechanical engineers as well as teachers are also among the top 10 most in-demand, he said.

For the overseas jobs market, in-demand professions include skilled workers (welders and pipe-fitters), engineers and nurses.

Most overseas vacancies are in Saudi Arabia, UAE (United Arab Emirates) and Qatar," he said.

Salome Siaton, director at the Department of Labor and Employment in Central Visayas, said there's a need for nurses both locally and abroad.

“Although the May 1 job fairs would not be depicting a very comprehensive and holistic picture of what skills in Region 7 are actually needed by employers, but because of them, we found out that of the in-demand jobs reflected, the common skill needed not only here but also outside the country is that of nurses.”

A total of 211 nurses are needed locally and 3,251 abroad, DOLE said. Countries in need of nurses include Saudi Arabia, UAE, United Kingdom, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

The DOLE has announced over 18,000 available local and overseas jobs are up for grabs in various job fairs happening today in Central Visayas.

Siaton said employers participating in the four different job fairs simultaneously taking place on Labor Day posted a total of 18,889 vacancies.

The significant rise was credited to additional private recruitment agencies that signified interest to join the job fair at SM City Cebu, which registered 860 local job vacancies and around 7,658 overseas vacancies.

For local employment, around 6,898 vacancies will be available for jobseekers with customer care service representatives at more than 2,000 topping from among first five commonly in-demand positions that also include sewers, cashiers, sales clerks and registered nurses.

Overseas employment registered around 4,518 needed positions for factory workers followed by skilled workers, nurses, cleaners, and laborers, among others, totalling to 11,991 jobs available.

The construction industry also has vacancies including carpenters, scaffolders, heavy truck drivers, and tilers, among others.

Jobseekers are urged to take advantage of the job fairs today.

The local job fair at Cebu Provincial Capitol tallied 1,970 vacancies; and the Mandaue City Sports Complex jobs event registered 3,600 local vacancies and around 1,500 overseas vacancies.

The local and overseas job fair at the Main Atrium of Robinson’s Place in Dumaguete City posted 468 positions needed locally and 2,833 vacancies abroad.
