CEBU, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Central Visayas is set to auction around 540 vehicles this month after receiving guidelines for the public bidding from its head office.

LTO-7 Regional Director Victor Caindec said they have just finished encoding all the engine and chassis numbers of the apprehended vehicles.

The vehicles for auction include 400 motorcycles and assorted vehicles like vans, sedans, coasters and jeepneys.

These vehicles were apprehended and impounded for several years due to various traffic violations and for being colorum and having no registration.

As a policy, LTO will auction vehicles that remained unclaimed in its impounding facility beyond six months.

The income of this auction will go to the coffer of the national government, said Caindec.

Caindec said they needed to dispose of the vehicles as they will need more space for new impounded vehicles.

“We need to dispose of the vehicles before April otherwise LTO-7 will pay more than 300,000 per month for the rental of the property,” he said.

The Cebu provincial government and LTO-7 signed a memorandum of agreement for the free use of the 2,500-square meter lot until April 2019.

He said the 2,500-square meter lot owned by Cebu province is no longer capable of accommodating more vehicles.

He said that the Commission on Audit (COA) cited in several reports that their office need to dispose of the vehicles already since the government is spending so much resources for keeping it already. — KBQ (FREEMAN)
