DOT pushes exporters to open up showrooms

Ehda M. Dagooc - Associated Press

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DOT) is encouraging exporters in Cebu to open up showrooms for tourists.

DOT secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat made this challenge to Cebuano manufacturers especially those who have made their own names in the international markets, citing the example of industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue.

“We want other showrooms to open. Tourists like to come,” said Puyat.

Aside from showcasing Cebu’s world-class designs in furniture, home accents, and fashion accessories, these tourists also would like to buy products as souvenirs.

Earlier, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-7) announced its plan to convince manufacturers and exporters to open showrooms for tourists.  DTI-7 regional director Asteria Caberte said exporters can exploit tourism and make money right here.

Caberte has been encouraging exporters to open up showrooms or participate in local exhibitions in the shopping malls, for foreign tourists and local market to see.

Caberte reiterated that aside from spending on promoting the export products abroad, it is also equally important to invest on making strong and visible presence in the local marketplace.

After all, export marketing is closely tied up with tourism. Promoting Cebu as a brand therefore, would already include its best products, Caberte added.
