QCPD probes guns found inside UP campus

MANILA, Philippines - The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) is now investigating the discovery of guns and pistol magazines in the drainage canal inside the compound of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman campus.

QCPD director Police Chief Superintendent Edgardo Gonzales ordered Police Superintendent Richard Fiesta, station commander of Anonas Police Station, to coordinate with the UP Diliman Police (UPDP) and look into the circumstances behind the unearthed firearms in the canal.

Last August 13, around 10:15 a.m., UP maintenance personnel James Menor, Alfonso Torres and Reynaldo Dayag were declogging and cleaning the drainage at the corner of E. Delos Santos and T. Kalaw streets when they found inside a manhole a loaded cal. 45, two magazines of cal. 45 pistol, and loaded cal. 45 Glock pistol, and a three other magazines of cal. 45 Glock.

The employees immediately informed UPDP officials who in turn reported the discovery of the firearms and magazines during a dialogue with police officers.

Authorities said that the firearms which were already corroded and covered by mud could have been used in a crime with the perpetrators intentionally throwing them in the drainage manhole.

The firearms and magazines were turned over to the QCPD crime laboratory for ballistic examinations and for possible comparison to other specimen to determine whether they were used in other previous crimes.

Tinio also said he is mulling for the review of present security policies between the QCPD and the UPDP to forge a memorandum of agreement that would further strengthen security measures inside the vast university campus.
