Philippines vapers hail US academies’ position on e-cigarettes

MANILA, Philippines — Local e-cigarette advocates welcomed the release of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicines (NASEM) report on electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) or e-cigarettes, which found these to contain fewer toxicants compared to “combustible” tobacco cigarettes.

“Although e-cigarettes are not without risk, compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, they contain fewer toxicants; can deliver nicotine in a similar manner and might be useful as a cessation aid in smokers who use e-cigarettes exclusively,” the NASEM said.

It also found that more frequent use of e-cigarettes increases the likelihood of smoking cessation.

“Scientific findings from independent experts continue to emerge, all affirming that e-cigarettes are a less harmful alternative to tobacco and a viable smoking cessation tool,” said Tom Pinlac, president of Vapers Philippines.

“The Department of Health should follow the lead of UK and US health agencies, and take a serious and objective look at the emerging evidence and expert consensus on e-cigarettes. It should be wary of critics and naysayers who, lacking any scientific data to back up their irresponsible statements, resort to fear-mongering and black propaganda,” Pinlac said.

He also cited the recently released US Food and Drug Administration 2018 Strategic Policy Roadmap, which expressed its commitment to “take a fresh look” at ENDS, including e-cigarettes “that can deliver satisfying levels of nicotine to adults who want access to it without burning tobacco.”

“Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes” is a consensus study report of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. NASEM provides expert advice on some of the most pressing challenges facing the US and the world, producing groundbreaking reports that help shape policy, inform public opinion, and advance the pursuit of science, engineering and medicine.
