UK meat exporters eye partnerships in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — Three British firms are interested in forming partnerships with local companies to supply meat products in the Philippines.
Jonathan Eckley, director of international trade development at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), told reporters during the Philippine-British Meat Trade Mission year-end reception that three meat exporters are in the Philippines to meet existing and new clients and learn about market opportunities in the country.
The AHDB aims to support the growth of the United Kingdom’s livestock, dairy and agricultural sectors.
Firms that are part of the trade mission include beef exporters Dunbia and Foyle Food Group.
Also part of the mission is QK Group, which offers a comprehensive range of meats and offal.
Eckley said the Philippines is an important market, particularly for the UK’s pork exports. “It’s (Philippines) such an important market. We can’t ignore it,” he said.
“The Philippines is our second biggest market outside of Europe,” he said.
Iain Frenkiel, director of trade and investment at the British Embassy, said the UK sees potential to do more in this space in the Philippines.
“We all know that UK meat is known for its high standards, sort of rigorous traceability, strong sustainability and internationally benchmarked food control, all of which are the answers to the market here in the Philippines,” he said.
Eckley said the plan is to continue trade missions to the Philippines to help the UK’s meat exporters.
“Export is significant. Even in a challenging environment, it’s still essential and we’ll continue to support the efforts of these exporters,” he said.
