ACEN to start P6 billion wind farm in Ilocos Norte

MANILA, Philippines — ACEN Corp. is ready to proceed with its next wind project following the signing of an agreement with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Technology (SGRE) for the supply and installation of wind turbines.

ACEN in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange said subsidiary Amihan Renewable Energy Corp. has inked an agreement with SGRE for the supply and installation of 14 units of wind turbines for the construction of a 70-megawatt (MW) wind project in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

The project, which is estimated to cost P6 billion, is targeted for completion by 2024.

It will be the fourth wind farm project of ACEN in Ilocos Norte.

The wind farm is expected to generate and supply clean power to more than 60,000 homes per year, and provide over 300 local jobs during its construction stage.

Once completed, the project can produce over 220 gigawatt hours of renewable energy per year, and eliminate over 130,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

It will help deliver ACEN’s supply commitments secured under the first round of the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program held last June.

“This is ACEN’s support to the Philippine government’s aim to increase the country’s renewable energy share to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040,” ACEN said.

Amihan Renewable Energy provided the lowest winning bid for wind renewable energy supply at a flat rate of P3.8583 per kilowatt-hour for 20 years.

Amihan is a wholly owned subsidiary of North Luzon Renewables, which is a joint venture between ACEN and Diamond Generating Asia Ltd.

ACEN said the latest addition to its wind projects brings 363 megawatts (MW) of total generation capacity in Ilocos Norte, together with the 81-MW North Luzon Renewables, the 52-MW NorthWind and the 160-MW Pagudpud Wind.
