Philippines posts biggest gain in download speed

Richmond Mercurio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has posted the greatest improvement in download speeds worldwide when comparing 5G experience to 4G, mobile analytics company Opensignal said.

Opensignal’s latest 5G global analysis showed that the country has the greatest uplift in download speeds, with average 5G download speeds 9.8 times faster than 4G.

The Philippines also topped the global ranking for improvement in mobile video streaming, with a 5G video experience score that is 34 percent higher than using 4G.

Opensignal said the country likewise ranks among the world’s top 15 for 5G reach, which measures the extent of the mobile experience in all the locations that matter most to everyday users, such as all the places where they live, work and travel.

“In most global markets, we are still in the 5G roll-out phase. However, 5G is becoming increasingly common,” Opensignal said.

However, in terms of actual 5G download speed, the country’s 140.6 Mbps is still far from those at the top globally.

South Korea has the fastest 5G download speed at 423.8 Mbps, followed by Norway with 355.3 Mbps, Taiwan with 320 Mbps, UAE with 309.7 Mbps, and Sweden with 291.3 Mbps.

Opensignal said its latest 5G global analysis highlights how 5G is accelerating improvements in the experience of mobile users worldwide.  It expects 5G to become an even more important part of life next year.

“Hopefully, as people return to offices, go away on holiday, and again visit friends and relatives in distant places users will find 5G enables them to be entertained and productive while fully mobile again. If not, and the pandemic continues unchanged, then 5G will continue to be important for connecting essential workers, cord cutters, and helping everyone to stay in touch,” it said.

“Whatever happens, 5G already underpins mobile services for many and helps to speed connectivity and sidestep congestion. And, in future, 5G will be the foundation of everyone’s mobile experience,” Opensignal said.
