ABS-CBN files $40 million lawsuit vs 40 pirate sites

Richmond Mercurio (The Philippine Star) - April 22, 2021 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — Media and entertainment giant ABS-CBN Corp. has filed a $40-million lawsuit in the US against 40 domains pirating ABS-CBN’s content and infringing its copyrights and trademarks.

The lawsuit entitled “ABS-CBN v. 123 Fullpinoymovieshub.com” was filed by the company in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

ABS-CBN said the court recently issued a preliminary injunction against the 40 pirate domains to take down the domains with a serving notice.

“We see it as our job to protect the consumer from the dangers that pirated content brings, and at the same time, provide quality content for their enjoyment,” ABS-CBN managing director of North and Latin America Jun Del Rosario said.

ABS-CBN has been going after pirates abroad through lawsuits filed to protect its content and consumers.

The company said the new lawsuit comes as news reports show piracy has made a comeback during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It said reports have shown that the lockdowns have resulted in more breaches of streaming security as a result of higher demand.

ABS-CBN assistant vice president and head of global anti-piracy Elisha Lawrence urged consumers to watch content on safe legitimate services such as ABS-CBN’s OTT platform iWantTFC and the TFC channel on all major cable and satellite providers.

“Beware of pirate domains, especially clicking on them. They usually contain malware which can substantially infect your computer,” Lawrence said.

In 2019, ABS-CBN won an anti-piracy case in the US after the US federal district court in Florida ordered 27 pirate site operators to pay $1 million each in damages to the Filipino company.

The said sites were found streaming portals that offer access to Filipino content in the US and abroad.
