MANILA, Philippines — Oil industry leader Shell Companies in the Philippines  recently bagged seven Asia Pacific Stevie Awards – most notably for its Shell Philippines Exploration BV (SPEX) arm, which was named ‘Company of the Year’ under the Energy category at the International Business Awards.

While Shell is known for being a major player in the oil and gas industry, it has gone well beyond this realm – spearheading campaigns that contribute to nation-building, while elevating significantly the quality of life in the country.

SPEX’s Malampaya Deep-water gas-to-power platform has been supplying up to 20 percent of the entire Philippines’ power requirements for almost two decades.

By maximizing the indigenous natural gas from the West Philippine Sea, SPEX’s operations have generated over $11 billion in revenue for the government.

A joint venture with the Department of Energy (DOE), Chevron Malampaya LLC, and the Philippine National Oil Co.-Exploration Corp., Malampaya is considered to be one of the largest and most significant industrial endeavors in Philippine history.

The Gold Stevie Award in Innovative Management was given to SPEX managing director and general manager Don Paulino.

The Stevie Award is a prestigious global premier business award that spotlights the successes and contributions of businesses around the world. Shell received one gold, two silver, and four bronze awards across five of the eight total categories in the APSA—putting their innovative operations and positive impact on Filipino communities at the forefront.

Additionally, the Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. also won a Bronze Award for Corporate and Community - Customer Engagement Event for Shell Rimula’s Tsuperstar, a campaign that sheds lights on jeepney drivers’ hard work. Through a singing competition, drivers are given an opportunity to express their talents and cultivate camaraderie among their fellow workers.

SPEX won a Bronze Award for Innovation in Community Relations or Public Service Communications for its information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign, which aimed to prepare coastal communities for an upcoming subsea maintenance activity.

The campaign allowed for its safe execution while minimizing its impact on fisher communities in the area.

Shell won another bronze award in the same category for the supporting communication campaign to deliver Malampaya’s successful scheduled maintenance shutdown in 2019. This was a crucial maintenance activity that extensively covers the offshore platform and the onshore gas plant. Because Malampaya is a critical part of the country’s energy system, maintenance needs to be intricately and effectively planned out to ensure zero disruption of power to consumers and communities. Through Malampaya and SPEX’s other initiatives, they are able to keep the lights on for a brighter future for Filipinos.
