Only in the movies

BUSINESS MATTERS BEYOND THE BOTTOM LINE - Francis J. Kong - The Philippine Star

There are familiar things you see in the movies. It’s like any or every movie should have the same scenes. I suddenly realized this when I got this article from the internet that is entitled: “THINGS YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW WITHOUT THE MOVIES” and then I realized there is truth to what this anonymous writer is saying.

During all police investigations it will be necessary to visit a strip club at least once.

All grocery shopping bags contain at least one stick of French bread.

It’s easy for anyone to land a plane providing there is someone in the control tower to talk you down.

The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. No-one will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any other part of the building you want without difficulty.

If you need to reload your gun, you will always have more ammunition – even if you haven’t been carrying any before now.

The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window in Paris.

A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds.

If a large pane of glass is visible, someone will be thrown through it before long.

If being chased through town, you can usually take cover in a passing St. Patrick’s Day parade – at any time of the year.

When paying for a taxi, don’t look at your wallet as you take out a bill – just grab one at random and hand it over. It will always be the exact fare.

Word processors never display a cursor on screen but will always say:

ENTER PASSWORD NOW.

12. Mothers routinely cook eggs, bacon and waffles for their family every morning.

13. Cars that crash will almost always burst into flames.

14. The chief of police will always suspend his star detective – or give him 48 hours to finish the job.

15. Medieval peasants had perfect teeth.

16. It is not necessary to say hello or goodbye when beginning or ending phone conversations.

17. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts, so you know exactly when they’re going to go off.

18. It is always possible to park directly outside the building you are visiting.

19. Most laptop computers are powerful enough to override the communication systems of any alien civilization.

20. It does not matter if you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involving martial arts – your enemies will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around in a threatening manner until you have knocked out their predecessors.

21. When a person is knocked unconscious by a blow to the head, they will never suffer a concussion or brain damage.

22. Police departments give their officers personality tests to make sure they are deliberately assigned a partner who is their total opposite.

23. Any lock can be picked by a credit card or a paper clip in seconds – unless it’s the door to a burning building with a child trapped inside.

Funny isn’t it? A businessman friend of mine says, “it is clearly evident that what happens in movies defy the laws of physics.” The truth is that many of the things you see in the movies happen only in the movies.

Like when man and woman meet and spends the night together, they ended up enjoying life together. It doesn’t work that way in real life. In real life, the girl gets pregnant, the man abandons her, and both of them are stuck with a guilty conscience, a broken relationship and they have to live miserable lives. You don’t see much of those in the movies.

The smooth-talking power suit wearing business executive removing his Italian suit and engaging himself to some off hours’ office romance. You see them in the movies. What you don’t see that happens in real life is that the big star of that movie could hardly manage his own marriage well. His family is a mess and he change wives as often as he changes his cars.

The real-life heroes, the brave and the strong are those who are committed to their wife and their family. They work diligently and take their leadership roles seriously and faithfully. He may not be able to wield a Magnum .357, but he loves God and is faithful. While the woman in real life may not be fitted with a Victoria Secret model figure but loves the kids, works hard and raise up a successful family.

Movies end after a few hours. It’s fantasy and got nothing to do with real life. But real life lasts a long time.
