Customs to streamline processes, operations

Mary Grace Padin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) said over the weekend it is planning to launch this month new system modernization initiatives that aim to streamline the agency’s processes and operations.

In a statement, the BOC said it is set to implement this June various computer systems, including the goods declaration verification system, national value verification system (NVVS), BOC portal, document tracking system, and the BOC dashboard.

The BOC said the computer systems are designed to improve transparency and reduce opportunities for corruption, and provide seamless trade services with lesser human intervention.

Moreover, the agency said these would provide simplified and accessible customs processes and services for stakeholders and the public.

The NVVS, in particular, is an online tool that can be used by customs examiners and principal appraisers to ascertain the truth or accuracy of any state, document, or declaration presented for customs valuation purposes, according to a BOC memorandum dated May 24.

“All these reforms and innovations are expected to further improve revenue collection and increase business opportunities for the trade industry,” the BOC said.

According to the BOC, the launch of the new systems is part of the agency’s efforts to deliver efficient and seamless services, and customs administration that is at par with global standards.

The automation of BOC processes is also part of Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero’s 10-point priority program.
