San Miguel to submit offer to build a new water source
MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel Corp. will submit to the government an offer to build a new water source in the next two weeks, its president and CEO Ramon Ang said Tuesday.
According to Ang, SMC’s unsolicited proposal will involve the construction of a water source with a capacity of up to 3,800 million liters per day.
SMC’s announcement came after Manila in March experienced its worst water shortage in years at the onset of summer, affecting homes of about half of the Philippine capital's roughly 12 million people.
At the height of the water crisis, SMC offered to help address the supply crunch, saying it was willing to utilize its untapped water allocation from Angat Dam to provide water to residents in the east zone of Metro Manila.
In January, SMC operationalized Stage 1 of its Bulacan Bulk Water Project. Once fully completed, the company is mandated to supply water to 24 Bulacan water districts at P8.50 per cubic meter, the lowest bulk water charge anywhere in the country. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral with a report from The STAR/Danessa Rivera
