MANILA, Philippines — Manila Water said Tuesday it accepted the resignation of Geodino Carpio as its chief operating officer.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, Manila Water said it appointed Abelardo Basilio to replace Carpio, who decided to retire early.

Basilio has been with the company for 22 years. The new setup will take effect at the close of business hours Tuesday.

“Mr. Basilio will serve as acting COO for Manila Water operations concurrently with his current roles as group director for strategic asset management and data protection officer,” Manila Water said.

The shakeup came amid a water supply shortage that hit customers of the utility owned by Ayala Corp.

Manila last month expriened its worst water shortage in years at the onset of summer, affecting homes of about half of the Philippine capital's roughly 12 million people.

The government has admitted that it has long anticipated the increasing demand for water, but officials said delays in projects that would expand capacity prevented them from addressing the problem. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral
