MANILA, Philippines — Construction of the Phase 1 of the Philippine National Railways Clark officially began on Friday, with the project seen reducing travel time to and from Manila and Bulacan to only 35 minutes once operational.

The project — designed to have a capacity of over 340,000 passengers daily and targeted to be operational by 2021 — will link Metro Manila to Clark Field, Pampanga.

It will have a depot in Valenzuela City and will be composed of 10 stations, namely: Tutuban, Solis, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Meycauayan, Malolos, Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas and Guiguinto.

“This will be seamlessly integrated with PNR Clark Phase 2 going to Clark, Pampanga and PNR South Commuter going to Calamba, Laguna, forming one integrated commuter railway system serving commuters travelling to, from, and within NCR, Region III, and Region IV-A,” the Department of Transportation said.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade led the groundbreaking ceremony together with Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda, Japan International Cooperation Agency Chief Representative Yoshio Wada and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co. Ltd. President and CEO Hideo Arai.

Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan, PNR General Manager Junn Magno, Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado also attended the event. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral
