Fruit crops output up in third quarter of 2018
MANILA, Philippines — Production of the country’s major fruit crops continued to improve in the third quarter, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Latest data from the PSA showed banana production inched up two percent to 2.43 million metric tons (MT) due to sufficient rainfall, bigger bunches harvested and new bearing hills from additional expansion areas of banana plantations in Mindanao.
The Davao region remains the top banana producer, accounting for 38 percent of the total production during the period.
Cavendish variety comprised 51 percent of aggregate production. Saba and Lakatan varieties accounted for 28 percent and 11 percent, respectively.
Pineapple production also increased 3.2 percent to 705,430 MT, mainly due to sufficient application of fertilizer, increase in area harvested coupled with bigger fruits produced as a result of intermittent rains during the fruit development stage.
