DOT launches food, travel festival in Albay, Cebu
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DOT) has simultaneously launched a food and travel festival in the provinces of Albay and Cebu as part of its focus to promote culinary tourism.
On Friday, the DOT officially opened the Kaon Na! Food and Travel Festival in Legazpi City, Albay and Cebu City.
Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said the twin-event is a fitting tribute to the country’s farmers whose produce and hardwork have inspired the diversely-rich Filipino culinary culture.
“This is traditional barrio fiesta and Filipino hospitality at its best. The only difference is we’re having it at the shopping malls which has become part of modern-day living,” Puyat said in Legazpi City.
In Cebu City, Tourism Undersecretary Arturo Boncato, Jr. and DOT Region 7 director Shahlimar Tamano joined foreign dignitaries, local officials, farmer exhibitors, tourists and students.
At least seven hotel chefs are featured in the demo-series, showing off their unique recipes.
The culinary extravaganza ran until yesterday and is part of a nationwide series that will promote food destinations in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Puyat earlier said culinary tourism is one key sector she would like to focus on.
