Pacquiao still mum on Roach for Kuala Lumpur fight

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao is not banging the door on Freddie Roach.

“Not yet final,” said Pacquiao on television when pressed with the question a lot of people are asking as he heads to his planned comeback fight on June 24.

Will Roach, who has trained Pacquiao since 2001, still be in charge of the Filipino superstar’s training which may begin next month?

“It’s a decision (to be made),” Pacquiao told GMA-7 News.

Roach said a few weeks ago he’s tried to get in touch with Pacquiao as news of his ring return began to circulate.

Not once, not twice, but five times.

“I usually leave him alone until I hear from him, but I’ve called him five times and haven’t heard back,” Roach told the LA Times.

“Maybe he changed his number,” he added.

Pacquiao recently announced that he’s close to making a deal with Golden Boy Promotions for him to fight WBA welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur.

No fight contract has been signed but Pacquiao insists that he’s close to sealing the deal.

Pacquiao’s camp announced that training will soon commence, to be handled by an all-Filipino crew led by Buboy Fernandez.

There was no mention of Roach. Yet, Pacquiao said he will come to the decision before training begins.

“Right now, I’m fixing the promotion. I’m working as a promoter before starting the training,” he said.

Roach may just get a call from Pacquiao anytime soon.

Or he never will.
