WATCH: Meralco’s electricty rates go down anew this June

MANILA, Philippines — Meralco released its latest advisory on YouTube announcing another decrease for June 2017 that amounts to P1.43 per kWh for a typical residential household. This comes after a P0.29 per kWh reduction in May, thus bringing down the overall and last month’s rate of P9.60 per kWh to P8.17 per kWh. 

Joe Zaldarriaga, a spokesperson for the firm, shared the postiive development through Meralco’s latest YouTube advisory.

“Good news! Bagamat tumaas ang Feed-in-Tariff allowance para sa renewable energy, bumababa naman ang generation charge (Despite the increase on Feed-in-Tariff allowance for renewable energy, the generation charge nevertheless decreased),” he said.

The June rate reflects the refund of over-recovery on pass-through charges from January 2014 to December 2016 totaling around P6.9 billion. Meralco’s petition for refund with prayer for provisional authority on implementation was granted by the Energy Regulatory Commission on May 11, 2017 for implementation from June to August 2017.

The refund will not be a separate line item in the bill but will be embedded in the different pass-through charges indicated in the bill, which include generation, transmission, and system loss charges and lifeline and senior citizen subsidies. For residential customers, the refund translates to a reduction of P0.79 per kWh, excluding taxes.

This month’s overall rate is the second lowest since December 2009. The rate decrease this month amounts to a P285 decrease in the total bill of a typical residential household consuming 200kWh.

Rainy season tips

Meanwhile, Meralco advised its customers on preparation for floods or typhoons in time for the rainy season.

This includes simple tips about charging your mobile devices, using flashlights and other important gadgets or rechargeable appliances.

During storms, customers should use rubber boots and gloves for added protection. In cases of flood, circuit breakers should be switched off.

Meralco also advises that after the weather episode, it is good to help clean debris in your area. If outlets or appliances are drenched, have a licensed electrician check these before using.
