Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The digital payments app of PLDT Inc. was named the best online payments solution at the 9th Annual Emerging Payments Awards held recently in London.

The award was given by the Emerging Payments Association, which groups payments companies.

PayMaya, which became available in September last year, beat other finalists such as Easypay by Easypaisa Pakistan, paysafecard in Austria, and Splitit in the US.

The Emerging Payments Awards is a prestigious industry recognition body in the global payments space which looks at outstanding innovations, programs and collaborations that made an impact in the lives of consumers and in the payments technology industry.

PayMaya is a product of PayMaya Philippines,  the digital financial services arm of PLDT and Smart Communications Inc.

Following the recognition given, PayMaya intends to continue to get more users of the app not just in the Philippines but also overseas.

“We are truly inspired and more committed to making payments and financial technology more accessible and available in the Philippines and other emerging markets,” PayMaya Philippines president and CEO Orlando Vea said.

“At the first instance, we are solving the digital payments challenge with PayMaya — a card for the uncarded. But beyond that, we are also addressing the pain points of convenience, affordability, and security. It’s all about enjoying the benefits of the digital life,”  he added.

Powered by Visa, the PayMaya app allows everyone even those without credit cards, to shop and make payments online. ?

To use PayMaya, one should download it from the Google Play Store or App Store and register with the app using any Philippine mobile number.

After registration, the app would generate an instant virtual Visa prepaid card with a unique 16-digit card number. Once activated, the app can be used for making payments.

Users can load their PayMaya account by visiting SM Malls business centers, Robinsons Department Stores, UnionBank automated teller machines (ATMs),  7-Eleven stores with Cliqq Kiosks, TouchPay Kiosks, and Smart Padala Centers, or by using the online banking of BDO Unibank Inc.

PayMaya users can also opt to get a physical card that can be used in establishments worldwide that accept Visa.

By upgrading the PayMaya account, users can enjoy other benefits such as being able to withdraw money through any Bancnet ATM, as well as transferring money to other PayMaya users.
