MANILA, Philippines - Musical artist and fashion designer Yoko Ono donated $10,000 to victims of typhoon Pablo in the Philippines.

The donation was remitted to the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo on Jan. 28, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

DFA said the wife of The Beatles's John Lennon learned about the catastrophe after she visited the official residence of the Philippine Ambassador to Japan on Dec. 5, 2012. Typhoon Pablo caused extensive damage to communities in Visayas and Mindanao.

"Ms. Ono spent her childhood years at the residence, an Iberian-style mansion built in 1934 which used to be owned by her uncle Iwajiro Yasuda. It was sold to President Jose P. Laurel, and was subsequently acquired by the Philippine Government after World War II," DFA said.

Ono has also donated to disaster relief efforts after typhoon Ondoy in 2009, and she assists schoolchildren in the Philippines, the state agency added.

Meanwhile, United States-based information technology company Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced Wednesday its plan to donate $50,000 for the relief efforts being carried out by the Philippine Red Cross in providing assistance to those affected by typhoon Pablo.

And also through the firm's HP Company Foundation, HP will donate 100 laptops to NetHope, a collaboration of 38 of the world’s leading international humanitarian organizations.

The notebooks will support NetHope's non-governmental organizations of their information and communication technology needs while working in the Philippines.

“The HP Company Foundation has a long history of providing disaster relief support to communities throughout the world,” said Ryan Guadalquiver, managing director of HP Philippines.

“By supporting relief efforts in the Philippines, we hope to help residents recover and rebuild after the damage left by this devastating storm," he said. (with a report from Tam Noda)
