MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Some 200 families fled their hometown due to fighting between government forces and the New People's Army rebels in Davao del Norte, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said today.

They have sought refuge at village halls, said council executive director Benito Ramos.

The fighting began on Thursday in a number of villages when government troops responded to a report about the sighting of about 300 rebels.

As of yesterday, Ramos said the military and police "are conducting clearing operation at the war zone to determine the presence of landmines" possibly planted by the rebels who had retreated.

Ramos said the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Council has recommended the declaration of state of calamity in the areas.
