Halos 600 media workers sanib-pwersa vs 'malupit' na desisyon sa ABS-CBN franchise

MANILA, Philippines — Bagama't mula sa iba't ibang media organizations, dinamayan ng sari-saring mamamahayag, editor at manggagawa sa media ang pagharang ng komite ng Kamara sa panunumbalik ng ABS-CBN sa himpapawid.

Biyernes nang 70 mambabatas ang kumontra sa renewal ng legislative franchise ng Kapamilya Network, kontra sa minoryang 11. Isa ang nag-abstain habang nag-inhibit naman sa botohan ang dalawa.

"We, the undersigned journalists, editors and workers from different media organizations, express our solidarity with thousands of our colleagues in ABS-CBN who risk losing their jobs after the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Franchises denied the network a fresh 25-year franchise," sabi ng pahayag.

"We condemn the unjust and cruel decision of the House committee that threatens the livelihood of workers as we are facing uncertainties due to the pandemic."

Makikita ang kabuuang listahan ng 584 media workers na lumagda sa pahayag rito.

Nasa 11,000 empleyado ng kumpanya ang nanganganib ang hanapbuhay dahil sa desisyon ng Kamara, bagay na bumigwas nang husto sa pinakamalaking network sa Pilipinas.

Matatanggal sa trabaho ang libu-libo nilang empleyado sa gitna ng coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic at record-high unemployment rate na 17.7% nitong Abril 2020.

Habang gumugulong ang franchise hearings, matatandaang binanatan ng mga konggresista ang ABS-CBN dahil aniya sa estilo ng kanilang pagbabalita, mga "imoral" na ipinalalabas, isyu ng dual citizenship ng kanilang chairman emeritus na si Eugenio Lopez III, at diumano'y isyu sa pagbabayad ng buwis.

"One media outfit shut down because of the whims and trivialities of those in power is one too many, especially at a time when the public needs credible and independently verified information to make informed choices," patuloy ng mga journo.

Matatandaang nakairingan ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang network matapos nilang hindi maiere ang kanyang mga patalastas noong tumatakbo pa noong 2016 national elections.

Taong 2018 nang sabihin ni Digong na hindi niya ire-renew ang prangkisa ng kumpanya kung siya ang masusunod: "Now, ABS-CBN, their franchise is due for renewal... But I will never also intervene. But if I had my way, I will not give it back to you," sabi niya.

Kaalyado ni Duterte ang kalakhan ng mambabatas sa Kamara kung saan nagsisimula ang anumang franchise bills, dahilan para magkaroon ng "super majority" si Duterte sa House of Representatives.

'Hindi kami propaganda machine'

Sabi pa ng mga mamamahayag, nagtratrabaho sila upang mabigyan ng impormasyon ang publiko na makapagbibigay sa kanila ng kapangyarihang magdesisyon sa araw-araw — hindi para maging "publicist" ng administrasyon.

"The rejection of ABS-CBN’s franchise bill sounds the death knell to a credible source of news and a huge attack on press freedom in the country," saad pa nila.

"In denying the network of a franchise, the 70 lawmakers clearly want to treat the press as a propaganda machine that will serve their political interests, embellish their image, and parrot their spin."

Aniya, tiyak na magiging marahas ang kasaysayan para sa 70 mambabatas na tumutol sa prangkisa lalo na't ipinasara rin ang ABS-CBN noong diktadurya ni dating Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Matingkad din daw na "nagpagamit" ang Kamara para lang makapaglunsad ng "personal vendetta."

"Victory came easy for the forces that conspired to bring down ABS-CBN. But the rehabilitation of the image of those condemned by history won't, as it will be fraught with the collective wrath of a people who live by democracy and the rule of law," kanilang panapos.

Sa kabilang banda, iginiit naman ni House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano na hindi isyu ng kalayaan sa pamamahayag ang desisyon ng mga kongresista na huwag bigyan ng panibagong prangkisa ang ABS–CBN.

"For those who continue to push the Freedom of the Press card, Congress is not stifling the right of any journalist, host, commentator, talent, or employee of ABSCBN - or any Filipino for that matter - from criticizing the government," ani Cayetano sa isang pahayag, Lunes.
