Cebu fans labing maayo

CEBU, Philippines — Gilab-as og balik sa retiradong Fil-Am pro basketball player nga si Rob Wainwright ang mabulukon niyang kagahapon samtang nagduwa uban sa Cebu Gems sa nabungkag nga Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) kapin sa duha ka dekada na ang milabay.

Si Wainwright usa sa labing unang mga sakop sa Gems sa dihang ang MBA nanghugyaw sa Philippine basketball niadtong 1998. Ang iyang mga kauban mao sila si Dondon Hontiveros, Stephen Padilla, Michael Manigo, Jan Montalbo, Chris Tan, Rudy Enterina ug sama niya Fil-Ams nga sila si Rob Duat ug Chris Mendoza.

Napakyas sa unang season, dali nga namawi ang Gems pinaagi sa pagpilde sa Negros Slashers aron langkaton ang 1999 MBA Southern Conference title.

"Outside of the great fans and great teammates, my fondest memory with the Gems is after we won the Southern Championship," hinumdum pa ni Wainwright.

"When we got back to Cebu and had a fans day at SM, the mall was packed with fans to greet us. One of the best feelings ever. Felt like a movie star at that time," dugang pa sa 6-foot-5 small forward.

Napakyas hinuon pagkulit og kasaysayan ang Gems niadtong tuiga human sila miyukbo ngadto sa Manila Metrostars, 4-2 sa ilang best-of-seven national finals.

Lucia, nakaduwa sab siya uban sa Shell Turbochargers, Coca-Cola Tigers, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters ug Barako Bull Energy Boosters sa 10 ka tuig niya sa PBA.

Balik lantaw sa iyang kaagi sa Gems, ang 46-anyos nga si Wainwright mideklarar nga ang mga Sugboanon maoy labing maayong mga fans nga iyang nakita sa tibuok niyang karera.

"Maybe I'm biased but Cebu fans were the best. Some of the best fans I have played in front of my whole basketball career,"  sumala pa ni Wainwright nga mipahuway og usa ka tuig sa PBA niadtong 2009 aron tabangan ang Philippine Patriots nga dominahon ang labing unang ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season.

Si Wainwright nga assistant coach na karon sa Davao Occidental Tigers sa Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) nga gipurma ni Manny Pacquiao tulo ka tuig na ang milabay, nagkanayon nga mapasalamaton kaayo siya sa duha ka tuig niyang pagtinir sa Sugbo.

"Didn't win any awards so I would say my biggest achievement with the Gems was the experience, the supportive management, the die hard fans, and some of the best teammates I  have ever played with," kanayon pa ni Wainwright.

"To be honest, my whole experience living in Cebu and playing with the Gems was memorable. It was my first ever job as a basketball player. The city, the team, and the fans were so good to me."
