Murder raps vs road rage slay suspect dropped

MANILA, Philippines — The murder complaint filed against a high roller poker player linked to a road rage killing has been dismissed after the victim’s family withdrew from the case.

The Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office junked the murder charges against Fredison Atienza on Nov. 17.

Atienza was tagged in the murder of IT professional Antony Mendoza along D. Tuazon Avenue in Quezon City on Feb. 25.

Senior Assistant City Prosecutor Elenita Macatangay-Alviar recommended the dismissal of the complaint against Atienza after Mendoza’s mother and brother submitted an affidavit of desistance.

In a copy obtained by The STAR, a witness and the victim’s brother said they were “no longer interested in prosecuting the case.”

Atienza remained in hiding after seven months of preliminary investigation on the killing.

The shooting stemmed from a traffic altercation when Atienza’s sport utility vehicle nearly sideswiped Mendoza’s motorcycle while trying to beat a red light, probers said.

Atienza went into hiding, with the police manhunt reaching Boracay where he checked into a hotel a day after the shooting.

He was included in the immigration lookout order issued by the Department of Justice.
